Composition

Helen (2025) is a documentary about a young catholic nurse who is forced to give up her child after giving birth in a nun's home for unmarried pregnant women. The soundtrack makes heavy use of classical choral music, and piano/string music. The religious themes of the story pushed me to make these decisions, as I wanted to sell the omnipresent and oppressive nature of the religious cultural values which led to a situation developing such as the one seen in the film.

However, each piece is also catered to the main emotional beat of the moment, either to underscore or to add depth. The most tragic moment of the film, when Helen is forced to give up her child so it can be sold for adoption is counterpointed by the track "It Must Be Seen", which is a very bittersweet little tune. I have a wealth of experience in choral music, and used a mixture of live and sampled choir voices to bring the pieces to life.

This Chewing Gum Advert was created as part of other students' 3rd year University coursework, I didn't actually take this module so I completed the work pro bono. I wanted to underscore the relative silliness of the advert, while still pushing the overwhelming anxiety soon to be solved by said chewing gum. The Director wanted an "angelic sound" after the gum was chewed, so I threw in a cheeky little choral chord hit as well.

I have also included "Off The Typical Path" in the playlist below, which was a piece I wrote for use by a therapy company, Atypical Psychology, in Swindon. I wanted to tell a little story of hesitation blossoming into something fulfilling. I also wanted to keep it useable for modern video advertising, so I put in a nice little drum beat + warm subbass.

Here is some small work I did for a game jam videogame, Mutant Ocean. When writing "The Sea Floor Beckons", "Onwards To The Coral", and "Fishfood", I aimed to encapsulate a 2010s era flash game aesthestic. With "The Sea Floor Beckons", which plays once you beat the game, I wanted it to be a little beautiful and a little sad, because while you have completed your task and experienced this wonderful little underwater ecosystem, you have essentially decimated it just so you can get paid. I worked on this game in collaboration with another artist, so not all the tracks in the playlist are mine!
